You will be receiving the prompt and writing your essay in class on the day of your final.
You should have received a slip of paper with instructions for an OPTIONAL creative component of the final exam. This is what that paper said:
There is an OPTIONAL component of the final exam that you may choose to do in order to bolster your grade. Prepare a creative representation of the American Dream. This could be a piece of visual art, a recording of an original song, a video of a different sort of performance, etc. This should NOT be a written text – no essays, poems, short stories, etc., please – and it should NOT be something you drew in pencil on a piece of notebook or printer paper twenty minutes before it was due. This will be scored on creativity, effort, and “aesthetic appeal” – so don’t do a drawing if that isn’t an area of strength for you. A very strong piece would be well-executed, thoughtful, and might somehow reference texts from the year’s curriculum. If you choose to do this activity, it will count as 1/3 of your semester final.
The final exam is worth 15% of your semester grade. If you do the creative component, it will be worth 5% and the synthesis essay will be worth 10%. If you do not do the creative component, the synthesis essay will be 15% of your grade.
