What can reading science fiction teach us about ourselves and our world?
In this class, students will study the essential elements of the science fiction genre as they apply to a greater understanding of literature, genre, and the effects of this genre on the developing world. They will be introduced to the masters and classics of science fiction through intensive study of short stories and novels, as well as newer additions to the canon. Students will also analyze the literary and rhetorical devices used within these pieces to develop author's purpose, style, and influence. Students will write literary analysis of classic science fiction as well as an original science fiction piece in completion of this course.
During eleventh and twelfth grade, you will earn two credits in literature and two credits in composition. Successful completion of this course will earn you ONE credit in literature. It is designed to meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards in literature for juniors and seniors.
