TODAY we discussed heroism and began creating a two-column table. On the left side of the table, we listed 5-6 things that we believe a hero is or does. The right side of the table should still be blank for now. (See notes for a picture.) Afterward, we watched a puppet show portrayal of Oedipus Rex. The story of Antigone is a sequel to Oedipus Rex, so it's important that we understand what happened before. If you were absent today, you will need to complete an alternative assignment to catch up. That assignment is attached below in PDF form. Finally, we began reading Antigone as a class. HOMEWORK: Find a book to read for your first SLIRP!

DUE: The first two letters of your abecedarium assignment are due today. The questions from the black book are due at the end of class. TODAY we opened up by nominating students for the Homecoming Court. After this, we discussed the SLIRP (Sophomore Level Independent Reading Project). The main activity today was the Play-Doh Writing Process activity. You do not need to make anything up; however, you may want to talk to a friend to find out what was learned and done. In the last part of class, we finished up the questions from yesterday. HOMEWORK: None. |

TODAY we started with a journal entry, available in the downloaded notes below. Following that, we took 20-25 minutes to finish our posters about Greek culture, and then taught one another about the subjects we studied. During the last portion of class, we used the black English textbooks for a short reading assignment (again, available in the notes). HOMEWORK: Your first two letters from the abecedarium activity are due 9/1 or 9/2. Also, our Play-Doh activity will be that day as well, so make sure to bring it in!

DUE: Your parent letter (syllabus form) is due today. Today is also the day that you needed to bring in your Play-Doh and journal; if you haven't yet, you must next week. TODAY we started with a journal entry, which can be accessed by downloading the notes (scroll down). Following that, we went over the student handbook. We took some notes on Ancient Greek culture and mythology; the notes are downloadable below. After this, we broke into partners and chose Greek gods to research further. Next class, we'll finish making simple posters and teach one another about the gods we studied. HOMEWORK: Your first two letters from your abecedarium assignment are due on 9/1 or 9/2.

DUE: Your "ABCs of Me" list is due today. TODAY we had kind of a jumbled-up day due to the taking of our ID photos. If you were absent and didn't get your ID photo taken, you need to talk to the front office ASAP. In addition to this, we began Step Two of our Abecedarium Activity. We took a look at some examples and then picked any two of our own A-Z items to write about. Guidelines: - Tell a story about YOU, not just that thing. Why is that thing or person important to you, or why does it describe you? Tell through a memory or story from your life.
- Write from the first person, in your own voice - as if you were just talking to someone. (No bad language, please.)
- You'll want to write at least half a page per letter; for full credit, aim for a full page typed (double-spaced) for each letter.
- Your first two letters are due on September 1st (A day) or 2nd (B day).
HOMEWORK: Your parent letter is due Friday; so is your journal and Play-Doh, if you haven't already brought them in. Two letters' explanations are due a week from now.

DUE: Nothing TODAY we started off with a journal entry; you can get the prompt by downloading the attached notes for today. Afterward, we learned what an abecedarium is and took a look at some examples. We discussed how an abecedarium could be the outline for autobiographical writing, and made a sample "ABCs of Harry Potter" list and part of an "ABCs of Mrs. Baker" list. We closed out the day by writing our own "ABCs of Me" lists, writing down different things about our lives and who we are for each letter of the alphabet. HOMEWORK: Your A-Z list for yourself is due next class. Your parent letter, Play-Doh, and journal are due by the end of the week. REMINDER: ID photos will be taken in English class next time!
