In this accelerated course, students will acquire the basic skills required for the analytical study of literature. Students will read a variety of literary works from a number of different genres and historical periods. Students will be expected to manage numerous out of class reading assignments in addition to assigned daily activities. They will consider aspects of plot, theme and language, as well as historical and cultural background, and determine how they contribute to the meaning of the text as a whole. Students will learn how to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support their own analysis of the texts that they have read. This class is strongly recommended for students considering future AP English courses at Columbia High School.
During ninth grade, you will earn one credit in literature and one credit in composition. Successful completion of this course will earn you ONE credit in literature and permit you to move on to Introduction to Genre the following year. It is designed to meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards in literature for freshmen.
