I have attached a practice test that covers the entire book of 1984. You MAY use this as a study guide over the book in preparation for the test. It is NOT an assignment.

I also reminded 2A to turn in their copies of Little Brother.

We learned about psychological literary criticism today. Please see the attached notes.

Your assignment is to read "The Rocking Horse Winner." This is on page 1310 of the green book, or follow the link to an online copy. Then, write a 1.5-2-page response that analyzes "The Rocking Horse Winner" as read through a psychological criticism lens. Again, see the notes for more information. This is due Friday.

You also need to read 1984 at least through page 260 - finish the book if possible. As soon as you have finished the book, I will give you the prompt for your essay assignment - the earlier you finish the book, the more time you have to write your essay! The essay is due on May 17 and may not be accepted late.

Today your practice of Marxist literary criticism was due.

We learned about feminist literary criticism today. Please see the attached notes.

Your assignment is to read "A Room of One's Own" for an introduction to one of the pioneering voices in feminist criticism, and then to read "The Doll's House." Then, write a one-page response that analyzes "The Doll's House" as read through a feminist criticism lens. Again, see the notes for more information. This is due Wednesday.

You need to read 1984 through page 224 (finish part 2) for Wednesday as well.

FINALLY! There is an extra credit opportunity! The attached file ("Geography") is a close reading/map activity from 1984. You can turn it in next week for extra credit. I am also still accepting photographs of you reading a favorite thing in a favorite place, if you didn't already turn one in.

Following this, we learned about the Marxist lens of literary criticism.

We took a quiz over Part 1 Chapter 4 through Part 2 Chapter 2. Afterward, we practiced working with the Marxist lens via a reading and analysis of "Araby" by James Joyce. This is found on page 1326 of the green textbook, or can be found online here or in other places. The instructions and information are found in the attached notes.

Your reading assignment for Friday is to read through page 167 (the end of Part 2 Chapter 7) of 1984.

Please read the poems below and then answer the questions on the final slide of the attached notes, dedicating about a paragraph to each of the three questions.

"Invictus" - written during Victorian times
"The Hollow Men" - written shortly after World War I
"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night" - written shortly after World War II

Note - "The Hollow Men" is a challenging poem. If you can read the version on page 1190 of the green textbook, you'll get many helpful footnotes and sidenotes that will make it much easier to understand.
